PEI to New Brunswick

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Left our little cottage around 9 am and headed out for a drive around PEI. We headed north to drive through the Prince Edward Island National Park starting with the Dunes System at Greenwich.

As usual we are taken by the old churches that are in beautiful condition and are still being attended. This is a United Church.

This one, although similar, is a Catholic Parish.

Nearing the sea on the north shore along side fields and flowers.

A special viewing platform that overlooks the marshes, the dunes and the ocean.

The walkways are built to keep people off of the eco-sensitive dunes.

Lucy and I are still bundled up against the cool air.

Many birds can be heard chirping among the marsh grasses.

Strange and interesting tree formations.

Very different coastline here with miles and miles of sand.

In both directions.

Much of the north shore is in Prince Edward Island National Park.

We made a picnic lunch and although the parks are not yet open for the season we were a able to find a picnic table and have our lunch.

Setting is amazing right next to the ocean. Apparently these beaches are very popular in summer.

Many walkways and ramps for access to the beaches.

The sand is also an orange shade and is quite fine.

Must have been a sale at Kent. (get pink while it lasts!)

Peaceful, pastoral and gentle are some of the words that come to mind as we drive through the island on its many back roads.

Often coming very close to the ocean which is actually the Gulf of St. Lawrence but still salty.
You can't visit PEI without a stop at the Lucy Maud Montgomery historical site. It is at the western end of the National Park in Cavendish.

This is a replica of the first house and is now the book store.

The following pictures are of the area and farm where L.M. Montgomery grew up and the very sights that inspired her writings.

An actual working Canada Post office.

The foundation of the original house where Lucy Montgomery grew up.

Her path through the "haunted" forest.

The landscape isn't able to be captured fully with the camera.

Some pictures of the interior of the original house of L.M. Montgomery's uncle and aunt where she spent a lot of her time. It is furnished with period pieces many original to the house.

Lucy leaving by way of the back screen door.

Lucy M. is buried at the same grave site as her uncle and aunt.

Heading back down the island towards the bridge.
We have paid the $46.50 to use the bridge. We didn't have to pay to get to PEI but we had to pay when we left so the cost includes both ways.

12.9 km of straight bridge, blue sky and still waters. An amazing day to cross. This can be totally shrouded in fog so we are very thankful for this clear day.

If you look closely you will see the bridge curve slightly to the right up ahead.

Our second view of New Brunswick.

We drove for about an hour until we found the cottage that we had booked. It is ocean side and very cozy.  Living room view.

And the kitchen view. We stopped to purchase some supplies for dinner and made dinner here at the cottage.

The temperature has finally warmed up. We had our dinner on the deck of the cottage.

After dinner we went for a hike through the marshlands to the dunes and the ocean.
The weather was threatening but the rain held off.

A walkway to the ocean over the marshlands and across the dunes.

Again, sand as far as you could see. There were a few brave souls wading in the water.

A good picture of the cottages in the distance. Ours was the one on the far right.

Good night from Marley.
