Road Trip Day Two Deer Lake to Port aux Basques

Today was a shorter driving day for us because we had only a 3 hour drive from Deer Lake to Port aux Basques. So we left Deer Lake about 9am and decided to drive the 50 minutes to Cornerbrook for brunch and a gas fill up.

The view from our hotel window in the town of Deer Lake of Deer Lake.

Heading out of Deer Lake at about 9am. Driving 50 minutes south towards Cornerbrook starting with driving along side Deer Lake.
Last rear view of Deer Lake as we are driving.

Traffic is very light as we make our way to Cornerbrook. This is Marley's favorite hangout.
The ski hills of the Marble Mountain Ski Resort

We didn't bother stopping to ski as there wasn't enough snow left. :)

Cornerbrook reminded us very much of Kamloops, BC. Set on a hillside and sort of in a bowl with low mountains surrounding it.
Lucy(Nana) and Marley having brunch in Cornerbrook

Had a late breakfast in Cornerbrook before heading on down to Port aux Basques.
Marley ready to hit the road on our last driving leg in Newfoundland. We have had another amazing visit. Thanks to all who made it so enjoyable.

On the way we stopped at the J.T. Chessman Provincial Park and Campground. Looks like a great place to camp. We drove all the way to the beach to see what it was like.

The view away from the ocean is also amazing

Not busy yet but soon will be with tourist season starting in a couple of weeks. This is part of the ocean but well protected by an isthmus. The sandy beach would be safe for swimming.
On the ocean side the beach was amazing from one end...

...to the other.

We finally arrive in Port aux Basques
Staying at the St. Christophers Hotel overlooking the harbour

The little kiosks are being prepared for occupancy by venders to create this small, dockside marketplace. Scheduled to open on the 1st of June for tourist season.

Entrance to the Port aux Basques harbourside walkway.

Water is crystal clear with a large variety of plant growth
and wonderful colours.

I have a feeling that this harbourside home had a bit of a starboard side li

Lucy and I on the walkway very close to the Atlantic Marine ferry dock.

Fishing vessels moored at the ready. Our hotel view is of the harbour but we have seen very little action on the water and it's a calm day.
The town surrounds the harbour on all three sides

"Don't mess with the ropes" would be a good sign to hang here. So perfectly placed.

Like in so many coastal Newfoundland towns, the church is placed on a very high place in the village. Also as a navigational aid to the fishermen.

The coastline around this area is varied and a lot less rugged than on the east coast.
The island with the lighthouse to the right is at
the entrance to the harbour.

The lighthouse sits atop the barren island accessible only by boat.

The surrounding harbour entrance shore. A very different rock formation than on the other coast.
One more for emphasis

This is a view of the inner harbour of Port aux Basques.

Marley has had a very busy day.
Tomorrow is "sea day".

We catch the ferry tomorrow morning at 11:45 heading to North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The suggested duration of the voyage is 6 - 8 hours...and a 1/2 hours time change. :)
(stay tuned)
